Designer spotlight : mies van der rohe

Mies Van der Rohe

“Less is more,” three little words that perfectly sum up the creative architectural genius of Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe. His simplistic stance has paved the way for many contemporary style and design ideas. If you are seeking to modernise your home and create an up-to-date look then Mies Van der Rohe is the designer for you. Let’s explore the fascinating background and work of this iconic architect.

A Brief History.

Born in Germany in 1886, Mies Van der Rohe (Mies as was widely known), went on to become an innovator of contemporary design. During the 1920’s and 30’s Mies worked as an architect, progressing to become the director of Bauhaus (an inspirational school of modern architecture). Things were going well until Nazism took hold and Bauhaus was closed (Modernism was frowned upon by the regime). Mies decided it was time to leave Germany and emigrated to the USA, where he took up a leadership position within the architectural school at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Mies became renowned for his unique style, and was not afraid to magnify the beauty of simplicity. He preferred modern materials such as glass and steel, and enjoyed the idea of openness and unhindered space.

Why Emulate Mies Van der Rohe?

Wouldn’t we all like to incorporate a bit of designer chic into our own homes? The clean lines and unfussy style of the renowned Mies Van der Rohe would stand out in any interior.
