Christmas is for...

A Traditional Christmas.

What does Christmas mean to you? Maybe you enjoy wearing a new pair of cosy PJ’s on Christmas Eve and playing board games or taking a long walk on a crisp Christmas day morning. That’s the joy of Christmas – building your own family traditions and enjoying the season in your own special way. There are some time-honoured customs that will always have a seat at the Christmas table, let’s explore a handful of the most popular:

Christmas Is for Gift Giving.

Christmas presents aren’t all about shiny paper and big bows! The idea of giving a gift originates from way back – when the generous Wise Men bestowed baby Jesus with the gifts of Frankincense, Gold and Myrrh. The custom of giving gifts has spread far and wide and the mere mention of St Nicholas, Father Christmas or Santa Claus is enough to send children into a frenzy of excitement. Exchanging beautifully wrapped presents with your nearest and dearest goes hand in hand with celebrating this magical time of year.

Choose your gifts carefully, and whatever you give, be it a hand-crafted wooden rocking horse for your niece, a box of artisan chocolates for your best friend or the bold and fresh Sunburst Clock from VOGA for your sister, be sure to give it with love.

Christmas Is for Enjoying a Turkey Dinner (With All the Trimmings)!

Around the world families gather for a Christmas feast, and the traditional fare varies from country to country. Some celebrate with a dinner fit for a king on Christmas day, others have their celebratory feast on Christmas Eve. In Germany the centerpiece is a roast goose or duck stuffed with apples, chestnuts, onions or prunes. The Spanish celebrate with a 'Pavo Trufado de Navidad' (Turkey stuffed with truffles), however, in North-West Spain some prefer to tuck into seafood.

Scandinavian festive feasts are particularly delicious (and long)! The holiday stretches from the first Advent Sunday to the end of December, and there’s plenty of traditional fare served alongside more contemporary dishes. There are local delicacies like spiced glogg wine, or you can savor the slow-cooked goose with apples and prunes, kale salad with pomegranate and meatballs with pickled beets.

Head to Norway and the selection varies from area to area but offerings usually include lamb ribs, cod and a firm favorite - “Ribbe” – delicious roast pork belly.

If you are over in the UK and you will have to give a shout out to sprouts, Christmas day is the one day of the year when the little green balls are given a warm welcome! Plates are piled high with turkey and stuffing, potatoes, turnips, carrots and parsnips, then lovingly smothered with rich, thick gravy – don’t forget the cranberry sauce. Christmas dinner offers a wonderful opportunity for family to get around the table together, and the Platner Inspired Dining Table from VOGA would be the perfect place to serve up your festive feast.

Christmas Is for Leaving Cookies and Milk Out for Santa.

Santa Claus does a marvellous job on Christmas Eve, and anyone who has that much ground to cover in one night deserves a welcome break. It’s traditional to leave Father Christmas a plate of cookies and glass of milk – so don’t forget to put them out on your innovative hexagon shaped Gio Ponti Modular Coffee Table before you go to bed.

Christmas Is for Drinks by The Fire.

Nothing says Christmas quite like a roaring fire. Pull up a chair (we suggest the comfortable replica Hans J.Wegner Teddy Bear Chair from VOGA), and toast your tootsies. There’s only one thing missing from this seasonal scene – a glass of festive cheer, keep it traditional and sip a creamy, sweet eggnog, or go for something with a bit of spice and enjoy a glass of warming mulled wine.

Christmas Is for Watching Festive Movies.

You can’t go through the festive period without enjoying a Christmas movie. Put on your comfiest PJ’s, pour the hot chocolate and gather the family. If you all want to snuggle up together you will need a sofa that has room for everyone (check out the Florence Knoll Style Corner Sofa). Settle down to a classic such as Scrooge, or a family favourite like Polar Express -  the perfect way to get you in the mood for the festivities ahead.
